President Barack Obama  said Friday he is weighing a range of options for countering the violent Islamic insurgency in Iraq, but he said the United States "will not be sending U.S. troops back into combat in Iraq," but other options are being considered.

The last U.S. troops withdrew in 2011 after more than eight years of war. Obama also said that Iraq's government needs to deal with the sectarian divisions that have given risen to the violence.

At the White House, Obama said Iraq's government has been unable to deal with the "terrorist offensive," and he has conferred with his national security team about possible short-term military action.

Obama also noted that Iraqi troops weren't "willing to stand and fight" against the militant attackers, calling it a "problem in terms of morale" and commitment that reflected the political divisions in the country.
