The radical Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group blew up the tomb of the biblical prophet said to have survived inside a whale.

The holy site is thought to be the burial place of the prophet Jonah, who survived in the belly of a whale in both the Islamic and Judeo-Christian traditions.

“ISIS militants have destroyed the Prophet Younis (Jonah) shrine east of Mosul city after they seized control of the mosque completely,” a security source, who kept his identity anonymous, told the Iraq-based al-Sumaria News.

“The militants closed all of the mosque doors and prevented worshipers from entering to pray,” the source said.

The tomb was located inside the Mosque of the Prophet Younis, a Sunni worship site considered to be one of the few historic mosques found on the eastern side of the city.

The ISIS has blown up several Sunni holy sites in Mosul recently, and last month destroyed seven Shiite sites in Tal Afar, about 30 miles from Mosul , CNN reports.

Last week, Iraqi Christians are fleeing Mosul after Islamist insurgents threatened to kill them unless they converted to Islam or paid a "protection tax".

Christians who do not agree to ISIS demands were also given the option to leave Mosul. According to a message from ISIS leader Abu Bakr [Unlink] [Unlink] al-Baghdadi, non-complying Christians were permitted to "evacuate themselves only from the caliphate state" by 12 p.m. local time on Saturday or their "only option is the sword."

The families were also warned not to take any of their belongings with them, threatening to harm them if they did so. Signs branding their homes were found throughout the city, including the writing: “it is the property of the Islamic State.”

Iraq is home to one of the world's most ancient Christian communities but its population has dwindled from over 30,000 to just a few thousand amid growing sectarian violence since the US-led invasion in 2003.

ISIS declared a new caliphate and an Islamic state to claim dominion over Muslims across the globe .

Islamic extremists have long aspired to recreate the Islamic caliphate that ruled over the Middle East for hundreds of years.
