The Jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) seized a major gas field in Syria Thursday, leaving at least 23 people dead in the process, according to Reuters.
ISIS forces have continued their march westward into central Syria today, attacking the major Shaar gas field just east of the city of Homs where they killed 23 of the field’s guardThursday in one of the bloodiest clashes between the Al-Qaeda offshoot and President Bashar Assad’s forces,
Footage apparently shot by the jihadists at the gas field and distributed via YouTube showed dozens of bodies, some of them mutilated, strewn across the desert landscape.
One video shows a jihadist posing with the bodies as he speaks in German interspersed with religious terms in Arabic, seemingly celebrating the killings.
Homs governor Talal Barazi also confirmed the attack.
"Armed men took control on Wednesday evening of the gas field, and we have lost contact with three technicians who were on the site," Barazi said.
"The armed men were present in the area beforehand, but they have now expanded their area of control with this new operation," he told AFP.
"The army is trying to take it back. There is fighting in the area and government air strikes."
The Sunni militants have captured advanced weapons, tanks and Humvees from the Iraq military that have made their way into Syria, and that fighters are crossing freely from one side to the other have alarmed the Syrian government .ISIS militants are fighting the governments on both sides of the Iraq-Syria border,
The takeover of the important natural gas field adds to the energy possessions of ISIS, which has also seized much of Syria’s oil production in Deir Ezzor, some oil fields near Mosul in Iraq, and a massive oil refinery in central Iraq.
ISISdeclared a new caliphate and an Islamic state to claim dominion over Muslims across the globe .
ISIS have declared the captured territories from Iraq's Diyala province to Syria's Aleppo a new Islamic State - a ‘caliphate and declared its chief, Abu Bakr [Unlink] al-Baghdadi, as "the caliph" of the new state and "leader for Muslims everywhere,"
Islamic extremists have long aspired to recreate the Islamic caliphate that ruled over the Middle East for hundreds of years.
